The details in regard to the research made in the field were published in the Nature Cell Biology journal. In their opinion, the discovery could lead to new drugs that help people with baldness or alopecia related to many factors. These include hormonal imbalance, stress, ageing and chemotherapy.
The researchers involved with this path breaking treatment have mainly identified two drugs. These when applied to the skin, would caused a metabolite called lactate to be produced. You must know that lactate helps speeds hair re-growth the activation of hair follicle stem cells, causing new hair to grow. It is inactive hair follicle stem cells that cause hair loss.
According to a researcher involved with the research the idea of using drugs to stimulate hair growth through hair follicle stem cells is very promising. This is considering the fact that millions of people, men as well as women, deal with hair loss.
There are some caveats to the discovery too. So far, the research had mainly been conducted on mince, and the experimental drugs used have not been tested on humans or approved for human use. The lead researcher also feels that the research is only just the beginning for understanding the critical role metabolism plays in hair growth and stem cells in general.
